Case study
Samudra Nidhi: alarm monitoring upgrade
A replacement alarm-monitoring architecture for a vessel with limited legacy-system support.
Cochin Shipyard Limited · DNV
The requirement
The existing Siemens SIMOS SIMAC 55 system had limited OEM support and replacement I/O cards were difficult to obtain.
Engineering scope
A replacement system engineered around existing inputs and outputs, with redundant control, SCADA operator stations, alarm history and vessel power interfaces.
Systems & technology
Schneider M580 hot-standby PLC, redundant ring network, SCADA stations, alarm/event logging and trend records.
Documented outcome
DNV certificate N142TWNT, issued on 24 December 2023, covers the AMS-UMS-2023 main alarm system for Samudra Nidhi. Cybersecurity networking is explicitly outside that certificate’s scope.
System design
Schneider M580 hot-standby controllers and redundant SCADA stations are connected through a redundant ring network.
Existing vessel inputs and outputs are retained in the replacement architecture, with main and backup 220 VAC / 24 VDC supplies.
The system supports process measurement, alarms, event history, temperature and pressure trends, alarm/log printing and maintenance access.
Quality and acceptance
The engineering scope covers marine-approved components, drawings based on existing vessel I/O, factory trials and class presentation.
DNV certificate N142TWNT identifies AMS-UMS-2023 as the main alarm system for Samudra Nidhi, purchased by Cochin Shipyard Limited.
The certificate references DNV ship rules dated July 2022. Later software changes must be handled under DNV rules; cybersecurity networking is outside the certified scope.
