Technical solution brief
Wartsila W26 engine-control retrofit
A PLC/HMI-based replacement approach for obsolete SMU and DCU control equipment.
Engine control & safety
The requirement
The brief addresses unsupported W26 SMU 1.1–1.3 and DCU 1–3 control equipment. It does not identify a completed vessel project.
Engineering scope
Main engine control panel, local HMI and an independent safety-trip panel for overspeed, jacket-water temperature, lubricating-oil pressure and emergency-stop protection.
Systems & technology
Marine PLC and HMI, a separate safety PLC, Modbus/Ethernet/CAN interfaces and signal isolators or converters for existing alarm systems.
Scope & application
The proposed scope covers engine sequences, governor interfaces, alarm history and FAT/SAT support. Vessel-specific scope and class acceptance must be established for each installation.
Replacement scope
The main control panel replaces SMU/DCU functions with a marine PLC and a local touchscreen for alarms, history and manual overrides.
A separate safety-trip panel handles overspeed, jacket-water high temperature, lubricating-oil low pressure and emergency stop.
Engine start/stop sequences and governor interfaces are connected to the existing alarm system through signal isolators and converters.
Engineering interfaces
The brief specifies DEIF or Siemens PLCs, a marine-grade HMI and an independent safety PLC.
Communication options include Modbus TCP/RTU, Ethernet and CANbus, with IP54/IP65 enclosures.
FAT, SAT and class documentation form part of the proposed delivery scope. Final selection and acceptance depend on the vessel installation.
